What is the BEC?

BEC means Basic Ecclesial Community.   According to PCP II, BECs are small communities of Christians, usually of families who gather around the word of God and the Eucharist.   These communities are united to their pastors but are ministered to regularly by lay leaders.   The members know one another by name, and share not only the Word of God in the  Eucharist but also their concerns, both material and spiritual.   They have a strong sense of belongingness and of responsibility for one another.   Usually emerging at the grassroots among poor farmers and workers, BECs consciously strive to integrate their faith and their daily life.   They are guided and encouraged by regular catechesis.   Poverty and their faith urge their members towards solidarity with one another, action for justice, and towards a vibrant celebration of life in the liturgy.   In many dioceses today, the BECs are visibly a significant expression of ecclesial renewal.

What is the BEC Endowment Fund?

One of the obstacle in the formation of BECs is the very limited finances of most parishes in the prelature.   Training of the community organizing volunteers (COVs), the day to day expenses of the COVs in the areas like their fare, food etc., the series of seminars to be conducted in the BEC areas and other expenses add to the burden of the cash-strapped parishes.

The BEC Endowment Fund, therefore, aims to raise funds to help the BEC programs in the Prelature.
