Missionary work in Libmanan began in 1580 and at that time the place was called Ligmanan. The parish was founded on 1586 but before then the missionaries from Quipayo already were evangelizing the place since 1580 to 1586. Ligmanan was a barrio of the parish of Quipayo.
When Libmanan was established as an independent parish. It included within its ecclesiastical jurisdiction the present towns of Del Gallego, Ragay, Lupi, Sipocot and Cabusao.
The first church was first made of bamboo and dedicated to St. James the Apostle. This served until 1599 when the friars obtained from the Supreme Government the necessary permit to construct a church of stone. Its site is now the premises of the Colegio del Santisimo Rosario. In 1730, the Very Rev. Pascual dela Cruz, O.F.M. began the construction of the new Church on another site right across the old one. He was able to finish the façade, the belfry and even the whole church up to the altar. The present wings of the church were planned by Very Rev. Timoteo Calderon, O.F.M. and permission to begin the work was granted by Bishop Gainza during the pastoral visitation in June 2, 1866 as shown by parish records.
Actual work, however, began only after another pastoral visitation in 1873 and was completed in July 1, 1877 through the efforts of Very Rev. Pascual Salvador, O.F.M. and certified as such by Bishop Gainza himself when he visited the parish on July 8, 1877. Very Rev. Anselmo Roldan added the four main columns supporting the dome and worked on the restoration of the ceiling of the prysbetery and of the church wings. Today a new renovation work is being carried out by the current parish priestas the parish celebrates its quadricentennial anniversary.
The name Libmanan was derived from Lagmanan which means a place that is surrounded with water. It is in this town where the Bikol river flows widest and so the place has very fertile soil and adequate irrigation to make it the rice granary of the province.
