PARISH OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
Sipocot, Camarines Sur

Foundation: 1801
Feast day: June 24

Sipocot was once a barrio in Lupi and became a separate town and parish only in 1801.   Early missionaries built a chapel in this place, made of bamboo and nipa, and was dedicated to the advocacy of St. John the Baptist.   Fray Tomas Guareņa, O.F.M. was the first parish priest.

The name Sipocot had its origin from the word "sipo" which means "driven into".   This has something to do with the unusual direction of the water from the creek that flows through the main street of the poblacion.   The direction of the water is "pasongsong" which means against the current of the Bicol River instead of following the downstream flow of the river.

Another legend about the name Sipocot is narrated thus. In the old days there was a man named Capitan Aguirre of Lupi who used to go fishing in Bigan River where he would catch more than what his family needs.   This reached the encomenderos of Lupi and soon Capitan Aguirre was summoned and questioned.   Capitan Aguirre them as to the location of his fishing ground.   So obsessed and determined were the Spaniards, however, that they looked for it and went further until they reached the river behind a hill and saw the net of "pocot" of Capitan Aguirre hanging on a shed.   Grabbing the net, the Spaniards hurled it into the river where it immediately trapped a school of fish.   In their excitement for having discovered the rich fishing ground, one of them asked while holding the net: "Sabes tu este lugar?" Thinking that the question was referring to the net on his hand, the natives answered back: "Si, pocot." The name Sipocot was derived.
