Originally, Barcelonita was a barrio in Libmanan. When Cabusao, another barrio, was separated and established as an independent municipality from Libmanan, Barcelonita became one of its aggregates. As a parish, Barcelonita is independent now both from Cabusao and Libmanan.
The parish was established on February 10, 1935 and the first parish priest was Very Rev. Fr. Pedro Lanuza. The original chapel was made of bamboo and nipa. Through his efforts the construction of a bigger church made of galvanized iron roofing and wooden panels was effected, adequate in size to accommodate the small population. He also built a small convent for his office and residence.
It is said that the original name of the place is Calampinay, which means a big shell. This is because the place was a rich source of shell windows. In the year 1865, the Spanish missionaries christened the place Barcelonita because of its perspective and location near the sea which reminded them of their native Barcelona in Spain. Barcelonita is the diminutive of the Spanish Barcelona.
