PARISH OF ST. PETER BAPTIST
Lupi, Camarines Sur

Foundation: 1726
Feastday: February 6

Lupi owes conversion to the faith to the fervent and zealous Franciscan missionary, Fray Juan de la Hoz, OFM, who was stationed at Libmanan until 1726 when Lupi was established as a separate town.   The decree which created the parish and town was issued on October 17, 1726 and the patron saint chosen for the parish is Saint Peter Baptist who is also the titular patron of the Archdiocese of Caceres.   The first church, dedicated to this protomartyr of Japan who was also appointed Bishop of Nueva Caceres, was made of bamboo and nipa.

The origins of this town are to be found in a peaceful little village at the confluence of Lupi and Palantuna Rivers.   This place was then called San Pedro and founded by sturdy pioneer settlers who came from various places notably, Libmanan, Calabanga, Camaligan, Quipayo, Gainza, Cabusao, and even Naga City.   The seat of the town, through the years, has been transferred from San Pedro to Lupi back to San Pedro depending on the caprice of each gobernadorcillo ruling the town.   This was resolved only in 1939 when President Manuel L. Quezon issued an executive order declaring Lupi as the permanent site.

The name Lupi was derived from the name of a certain grass, a species of reed, which grew abundantly in the place.
