PARISH OF STS. PHILIP AND JAMES
Minalabac, Camarines Sur

Foundation: 1583
Feastday: May 11

The town was founded in 1580 but the parish was canonically erected in 1583.    Its original site was located in the sitio of Inguinan but was transferred to the present site because of frequent floods which submerged the whole sitio under water for several days.

The church is dedicated to the Apostles, Saints Philip and James.   The first structure was made of bamboo and nipa.   When the transfer to the present site of the seat of the town and parish was effected, a new church was built with stone foundations and wooden walls.   This was burned down in 1732.   Two years later, in 1734, a new church of stone was constructed under the direction of Very Rev. Fernando de Talavera but this was also gutted by fire together with the parochial house and a large section of the town in 1831.   The church and convent were reconstructed in the following years by Very Rev. Fr. Francisco Molinero and Very Rev. Juan de Toledo.

Formerly, the town was called Minalabag, derived from "mina" meaning mines and "minabalagbag" (running across) according to the common belief of its residents. The streets running across the town may partly corroborate this claim.   The town and parish now bears the official name Minalabac.
